I live in San Francisco and I'm thinking of buying bamboo for my backyard, but I'm not sure which species of bamboo are good. Does anyone have a recommendation for where to buy, and what type to buy?

You will find a lot of Shops in the area that sells many kinds of bamboo that will thrive in San Francisco like the..
"Bambusa multiplex “Alphonse Karr”
Native to China
Variable tropical bamboo, useful for screening. Elegant slender arching culms, yellow with irregular dark green striping. Can be grown indoors."

You should also decide if you want a spreading Bamboo or a clumping Bamboo. One you are fighting to keep in one spot, the other clumps and is very well behaved.
