I am so bad at decorating and constantly ask friends for their ideas. I have a mauve/pink sofa, love seat and chair in my living room and right its looking shabby chic. I'm tired of it -- there is an oak bar in the room along with a big screen tv on the wall -- i need to change the decor entirely but do not know what colors to do wall, accessories, curtains -- i have oak floors as well. right now, the tables are white and i have a lacquer entertainment center that i would ditch entirely. i cannot afford new furniture - so i have to work with what i have. the furniture, except for being outdated, is very comfortable and in good condition. I was thinking black & tan -- what suggestions would you have?

I too have oak floors. My choice for sofa is definately in the browns. Sort of a light brown.
I do use carpets in the browns also.
Curtains , I prefer white lace only. I love lace . Hate drapers.
In the brown world the color seems to last forever..

Try slip covers
Or throws.
I upholstered some of mine.
Chairs mostly.

Before you can pick out colors you need to determine what kind of feel are you looking for. Do you want subtle, warm and cozy or vibrant. Tradition, contempory, or southwestern....? Knowing this with help determine a color scheme and accent pieces.
