I put organic compost in the bottom of the planting hole of each new clematis.
After it is planted,
I put down a layer of mulch ( i love cotton hull mulch), around the base of the new clematis. Then I lay flat rocks on top of the mulch.
This helps keep the roots cooler. Also plant a low growing plant around the base to help keep the roots cooler too.
