I have gone through quite a few gas mowers, pretty much annually! I didn't drain the gas each end of season and I didn't maintain them. The corded electric mower I have works great. Since I use it to mow my entire third of an acre property, I have a system worked out with electric plugs in the back shed as well. That takes care of reaching the back orchard. It's a bit annoying to work with the cord, but I can count on the thing year after year!

I have had an electric mower for 3 years now, we mow 4 yards a week thru the mowing season. I love it, once you figure out the cord throw it is a breeze.

When I was looking at the battery operated mowers, the average amount of time that the battery lasted was around an hour, hour and a half, give or take (said it was good for about 1/3 acre). Some of the mowers had a removable battery so that you could have a back-up battery recharging and ready to to go, if you need more time.

Thanks daisybeans - that's what I was wondering. Sounds like it would be rather large initial investment for us. We don't have outside electric here in WI either. Only one out building still has electric hooked up.
Thinking I'll re-visit the idea when I need to replace a mower in the future.

I've had an electric mower in the past and liked it. I've also had a few reel mowers, which can work quite well for smaller lawns. If you are in shape. Right now I have so little grass that I "mow" it with an electric string trimmer.
