wow BEEN A WHILE.
I planted a whole lot of seeds last spring from the last gt seed swap.
One pant that came up was unusual.
THE PLANT GREENERY HAS THAT STRINGY, LACY LOOK LIKE A COMBINATION OF A COSMO WITH A SIMILARITY TO A SPECIALTY MARIGLD.(sorry about the capitals) All summer it kept growing and growing and GROWING! Everything else in the garden died off and I said , what a dummy, I have the happiest well pampered WEED.
So last week I went outside to pull everything out and turn the soil. I looked at the "weed" and lo and behold it had buds all over the plant. and one lowly flower. bright orange and looks just like the cosmo flower. Now, I forgot to mention that the plants themselves (stems and lacey leaves)are over 10 feet tall.
Some are even more.
They seem to be undaunted by the cooler SC (40* nights--65*days) weather.
The master gardener @ the center, said he thinks it is in the chrysanthemum family but all his info says the flowers are yellow. and mine are obviously marigold orange.
All I can think of is it may have come from a GT swap. Did anyone have a plant that sounds like this description??
I do have some pics and as soon as I can get hubby to figure how to post them I will.
I am also going to post this on some of the other gardening boards too.

I meant to add that the M gardener was leaning towards Euyrops (SP?)

DMJ.... I have some Cosmos that are gold, yellow and orange. They sound similar to what you have... except for the height. Mine only grew to about 2-3 foot.

I haven't seen any other colors except pink and white cosmos.

There are orange and yellow cosmos. The only variety I have seen is the cosmic mix, but I have never heard of them getting that tall nor as the foliage as lacey as the pink cosmos.
If the MG thinks this is in the chrysanthemum family, does it SMELL like it too? they all have a distinctive odor to them. At least all the ones I have ever been in contact with, but I have never seen any with lacey foliage, either.
Get your picture up and maybe it will jog someones memory.

I bought a packet of seeds of these from one of the DIY stores. Do they resemble your's?

hubby will be home soon. I hate this new camera. I still for the life of me cannot remember how to get the pic from the camera to the computer.
I guess lacey is not a good description. It is not a solid flat leaf.
Several of the pics look like my flower. But it is definatly 10+ feet or more tall.
This may or may not be it's last weekend. The temp is going to be very cold.
Will be back this afternoon.
Thank you for the posting pic info. We will attempt it this afternoon.

Hi, I planted some cosmos seeds at the end of my home and within no time they were 6'. I actually pulled them up replanted them and they kept growing to about 10'. I couldn't believe how huge they were. But still, they had beautiful flowers. I have a couple pictures.

that is my flower too.
I took pics of them but still haven't gotten them on the computer. Ended up doing a hundred things Saturday afternoon and 200 on Sunday.
so it is a cosmo! Any idea of the name of it?
The master gardener aat my center would like some info too.

I no longer have this Cosmos as it died back in the last two winters. The seeds I received as a "freebie" from some garden center. So I don't know what kind of Cosmos they were. All I have left are these pictures. When I first planted them, I expected maybe 3-4 foot high plants. But they grew like small trees and had to transplant them. I wish I knew the type of Cosmos they were also. I'm going to check the area where they were to see if there are any plants left. It's now overgrown with weeds. I'll let you know.

That would be the one I posted earlier. That one could be the 'Klondyke Mix' cultivar, it consists of a variety of colors in shades from yellow to orange and scarlet but you would need to do some searching to verify that. The other cultivar is a dwarf so considering how tall yours has grown I don't imagine that one is yours.

I found an interesting site called, "Zanthan Gardens|Cosmos, The Tall and Short of It". The author there describes his experience with giant cosmos. I don't know how to copy over the web address, but all I did was search "giant cosmos pictures".
