Thought I'd just give you all a few tips on how to deal with this 'dreaded weed.'
Our neighbour has it growing in her garden and will NOT cut it back or dig it up. It creeps under the fence on my side so this is what I do.
I push short lengths of garden cane into the soil next to the shoots and wrap the stems around the canes. This stops the bindweed from entwining itself around other plants. I then cut off the bottom of 2 ltr plastic water (or juice) bottles and remove the cap. I pop the bottle over the cane and bindweed and spray into the neck of the bottle with a concentrated salt mixture. I then replace the cap. Before you know it the plant has shrivelled and died as the heat in the bottle ensures the salt burns it very effectively.
I don't use any chemicals in my garden but you could always spray a systemic weed killer into the bottles which may (if you are lucky) kill off the whole plant.
If anyone else has a more efficient (and natural) way of killing off this very invasive weed I'd love to hear about it.

Great home-grown tips for bindweed control Eileen.
They might work better for some people than the herbicide "glyphosate" which some people have reported takes approx 3 applications to even weaken the tyrant

That is a great idea Eileen, I think no matter where in the world you are there is bindweed, I will certainly give your idea a go.
