What type of carpeting to use on a foyer stairway with oak treads (exposed on both sides)?

We presently have 15 year old short pile that has seen better days. This was not the best of choice for the stairs.

We have an Oriental Style octagonal carpet at the base of the stairs so the carpeting cannot be busy.

While we like berber for it's ability to handle heavy traffic I don't think it will bend over the treads and look good.

Our short list: Short pile, durable, cleanable, will not clash with oriental floor carpet at base of stairs.

Any ideas?

I have installed berber on several stairs with no problem at all.It just takes a little more time to get it right.
