I think 'Draceana Marginata' also, and in particular maybe 'Colorama' as the variety. It looks just like the ones we have at the market, but I too am used to a central stem...mabe the depth of the pot is covering it?
For care: Bright light. Water when the top of the soil is dry. It's a pretty easy care plant. Sometimes the leaves can get dusty, just wipe with a damp cloth to remove it.

I think you're right. Did a bit of reading and see that this is probably a starter plant. As the plant grows it is normal to lose the bottom leaves and turn into a tree.
