My sweet hubby has decided to grow chives in pots in one of our indoor windows. How about some advice on this, please. Sun or bright light, we have lots of sunshine coming through the south windows? How about fertilize? When do we cut the chives?

    Thanking you in advance. :D

Hi! Right now I'm reading Rodale's Illustrated Encyclopedia of Herbs. It says, Chives need full sun; five hours optimal. They like 70degs during the day and 60's at night. Water when the soil begings to dry and give plants room for air circulation. Repot when plants look crowded. Fertilizing potted herbs involves a balancing act. You don't want to give them enough to get leggy and begin to lose their flavor. Once a month applications at half strength should be enough.

I don't have room for plants inside but I am trying to start some for outside. Today, it is snowing so everything is crowding the laundry room. Dooley

Chives are my must have herb . They are very easy to grow . I have 100 pots in the back area of my garden , about 50 for presents the rest for home use . If you use a potting compost you should not have to fertilise . I divide mine every year into new compost and it seems sufficent .When they get to about 4 or 5 inches just pull or cut them for cooking , leave about an inch to regrow . 8) Bugs

Now let me ask this....a friend of my husband's gave him some chives and I am very new at gardening.....she told him to lay it all down flat and the chive plant is very tall. When I was planting, I was only going to just put the roots in the ground but he kept saying that his friend told him to lay everything in the ground flat and he insisted to do what she had told him to do. Please advise.....Thank You......
