Redhawk that does look like an acorn end. You might take it to your local Ag Extension office to find out which type of Oak it is.
SOJ, the mature pecan leaves of some pecan trees are long, thin and pointy but the sapling leaves on mine are large and round. Even the leaves on my two 15 year old pecan trees are pointy but round instead of thin.
That's why I was wondering if the different species have different leaves.

I know what you mean . . . You all even have an oak in Texas that has lance shaped leaves like the pecan tree . . . Now I am wanting pecan pie . . . what's that all about????

I'm going to see if I can find one under my pecan tree.Oaks are everywhere here.

Its probably an oak of some sort.This is a picture of my grown pecan tree leaves.

My first thought was an oak of some kind as well, then doubted myself with all the talk of pecan. Any way you can get a closer shot of the leaves? Also is there any oaks near where these seedlings are sprouting up? If not, have you or someone hauled in any leaves from elsewhere to use in beds/compost bin?
