Hee hee hee....
Well, last year I saw what looked like this plant growing well in a big garden called "Appeltern"
http://www.appeltern.nl/EN.pdf A PDF, but the website (in Dutch): http://www.appeltern.nl/cms/home.html
and so I wonder if you can't grow it in a big pot and you and your man move it to a sheltered place in the winter.
I remembered being struck by it's beauty at the time.
Here is my foto taken on that day. I am not sure it is the same plant as what EJ showed, but it could be the same family.

It was a memorable day on many accounts, not the least of which were our visiting friends with whom we experienced this attractive garden complex.

Sjoerd I think your piccie is actually of a type of oriental white poppy - maybe a papaver? I've seen them in garden centres over here and they are beautiful. Droopy if I can grow them then maybe, as you can't grow the cistus, except in a greenhouse, these could be planted instead?

You could well be right, Eileen. My memory isn't what it used to be.
In fact, the more I look at it the more it does look like a poppy. Embarassed

However, look here:

and Here: (just scroll about half way down the page). http://www.rampantscotland.com/let050618.htm

What do you think?

Thanks for the pot idea, Sjoerd. I avoid growing anything in pots because I'm notorious for killing them. Laughing The Cistus shall have to remain a dream for some time, but I'm sure there will be more hardy cultivars soon. If I can find poppies looking like that, I'd be happy for quite some time. Very Happy

Oh dear I'm obviously having a bad day today. I think I'll stay away from IDing plants and go out and play in the garden instead. Laughing Laughing

Don't you do that....you're the BEST! Very Happy

You could just go and do the "Biita Pop" for 10 mins and all will feel much better. Wink

Look what I found!!! I took this piccie on holiday in Holland last year.

I have it under the heading of peony, just to throw the cat among the pigeons so to speak, so my poppy theory was definately wrong. Laughing Maybe that's what your one is too Sjoerd!!

Nope it certainly doesn't and the buds don't look much like poppies either!!! Embarassed I must have stuck it in the wrong place when I was sorting my piccies out. Rolling Eyes I'm sure someone will tell us exactly what it is though so that I can rename it in my album.

Nope, they are defo Cistus, I know because one of the gardens I work in has a collection of about 10 and they are all in flower now. The problem with me and photographing flowers is I look at the flowers and not the foliage.

Glad you all loved the pics, I have more!!

Okay, a few more to tickle your taste buds, and yes, I still have more if you want!

Roses everywhere!

Love these little piggies hiding in amongst the plants.

Peony

Poppy, an annual I think.

Monkshood - very poisonous.

Lovely delphinium

Oriental poppy

Clematis

Double clematis

Allium, or an onion by any other name!

An abutilon climbing up a wall.

Hope you enjoy.

Gorgeous fotos. I particularly liked that blushing pink and yellow peony and that Clematis (3rd from the bottom). I think I may have that Clematis if it is the 'Josephine'. Mine did look slightly different, however.
...if I could get my paws on that orange poppy, I'd be a happy fellow. Is it an 'Islandic'?

I think it may be Sjoerd. It is a shame that people don't have labels on their plants, I suppose in some gardens it isn't practical and I know from my own experience that they do vanish over time.
