Lupine jumps into my mind when I see this plant, but now I'm doubting my first guess. Anyone want to set me straight?

No, it's a Delphinium, a very stately perennial that gets even lovelier with age.

We all get those. I feel those spells are more frequent this year than before too.

The worst is when a visitor asks the name of the plant and until that moment you knew what it was, then it has Gone with the Wind.
Snails are not as much a problem with our Delpiniums as he wind blowing them over before I remember to stake them!

Another question, is it possible this changed colors? Here's a picture of the same area a few years back.

It appears it has taken on the color of the clustered bellflowers. ???

Just to compare....

Oh, oh, oh, the pale blue is wonderful! I've never heard of them changing colour before, but that would be a nice feature for any garden. Adding a bit of excitement.

Serious now: Unless you've planted a new one and forgot about it, there might have been two plants in there, and the pale one was the biggest, bloomed first but then died, leaving the field free for the dark one. The petals of the pale blue are more delicate and single too, so I really doubt it's the same plant.

They also self seed quite freely and the offspring are not always the same as the parent.

Those are beautiful plants. That would fit right in up here, big and tall, since everything gets over grown from all the sun. Dang i want some of them.

Love the Delphinium, Pianolady. What a gorgeous display with the other blue flowers. You have a truly beautiful garden.
