Across the back of my property, I have a Lilly hedge. When I planted it about 20 years ago, I planted one single row. Now the row is 6 ft. wide. It runs about 100 yds. Thes are what my mom called tiger lillys, but most people around here call them "ditch lillys" as they grow wild in the roadside ditches.

After they are done blooming, I mow them off and rake up all of the residue. If we get the rain then I sometimes get a second blooming. But it's usually not very wet in Aug and Sept here. And they come back even thicker than they were before. They are quite invasive.

I love those lilies too...but here they call them ditch lilies not tiger lilies. Here is what we call tiger lilies...
These are what we call tiger lily's because the petals pull back from the front and the spots...
These are what we call ditch lilys in Wisconsin...they are usually found in the fields along the road or in a woodland setting...

The ditch lillys is what I have. I think my mom made names up, if she didn't know what they were.

Captain...I know what they are from nursery books and I haven't seen a lily that I don't like. If I could I would have one of each. I had a gardening friend from Canada send me the ditch lily from there, thinking they were the tiger lilies. I didn't tell him, but they have the tubors like the ditch, not bulbs like the tiger lily. Beautiful area you have. I put some ditch lilys behind the bird pergola and the side of my garage. I know they must have another name but that is what everyone that sees them says they are...Sherry

Nothing much prettier than orange day lilies and shasta daisies! Throw a few Shasta daisies in there and you have a winning combination  That is an impressive hedge. I like the idea of mowing and letting it start over It looks so lush and healthy.

Very nice! Reminds me of back home in Perrysburg where I grew up. We had tiger lilies growing around three large maple trees up the driveway when I was a kid...oh so many years ago!

Actually according to the one of the garden centers that sells nothing but Daylilies both names apply to the same lily....Hemerocallis fulva. It is known as Ditch Lily, Tiger Lily and Orange Roadside Lily.
Score another point for knowing the Latin name of plants

Toni is so right. Common names can be very misleading, and they differ from place to place too. Not to mention from country to country. I try to learn the Latin name of our plants, otherwise I'd have no fun playing in here, even though I feel I'm getting good at common names.

I remember seeing those in Pa, they were everywhere. I thought it was a very pretty site to see along the highways. Yours are very pretty also, and look so nice in an arc like that,,,very nice!

Nice lilly hedge, Captn. It's a massive sight to see. Your lawn looks so nice too. Things look lush there in the warm sunlight.
Sherry, your lilies look smart as well.
I do not know the tiger lilly...but the other one, we place in the "daylily" class. I have noticed here that daylilies are not attacked by the lilly beetles (at least here)--so I have a few.
