Has anyone had any problems with transplanting basil? I had some in the garden last year and Then move it to its own herb garden and now this year I have nothing. What are your tips on transplanting?

Thanks frank. But if anyone still has any more information I would appreciate it. As my basil was already planted in the garden and I just moved it to a new section (herb) garden. And this year did not come back. What would of happened in the move??

It might not have had enough time to recreate the root system before the weather got colder. I find basil to be one of the harder herbs to transplant and grow. I can move my chive, sage and thyme anytime and it is fine but they are heartier. I would just suggest to start again when it is optimum in your area to do so.

Wait a minute. Basil comes back year after year? I thought it flowered and then passed on? I am serously confused. I have several plants in their first year that took an act of god to get growing from seed and I would love for them to come back. I have no problme growing them from seed although it takes a tremendous amount of love and care to do. The one herb I cant grow is rosemary. grrrrrrrr!

Some basil can come back. It should reseed with the flowers it grows. Some basil is perennial and some is annual. I think that it also depends on what zone you live in. I don't think that sweet basil will come back in my Zone. The winters are too tough.

Petunia, Basil is an annual in our zone.
You will need to replant it.

I guess I could be wrong, but I almost thought the basil I had last year had come back from the previous year. Well I guess I'll just plant it in front of a window so that I can use it through the winter time. Thanks Netty.
