I actually use spoiled hay to "earth up". I place the seed taters directly on the ground and cover with at least 6-8 in of hay. I use additional hay to cover the foliage when I need to earth up. They all you have to do is pull away the hay to harvest the taters. No digging.

Please tell me what you mean by Spoiled hay? I want to try your method next year and need to know what it is. Hay is different from straw, right?

You can use straw too. Yes, hay and straw are different. Straw is not eaten, just used for bedding. Hay can be used for both. Straw will be more expensive to buy. "Spoiled" hay is basically what comes off the barn floor. Its the bedding the livestock have peed and pooped on. I have 10 goats, 3 pot belly pigs and 16 hens. We have alot of hay to get rid of. lol

I learned this method from reading Ruth Stout books. There is "Gardening Without Work" & few others she wrote.
