A little while back I kept seeing pieces of a nest in this tree. Then some of it even dropped down on the ground. This morning I looked up and seen this little baby tail. Here's what I got:
Mom dove sitting over her baby. Can only see the hiney of the baby for now.
They don't seem to have much of a nest. Anyone know the reason why they build such a small nest?

Barely hanging in there.Good photos, I have no answer why they built a shack instead of a mansion.

Our doves build nests just like that too but I really don't know why. I always worry that the eggs or the babies will fall out but it never seems to happen. Great photographs btw!!

Their nests are so fragile that if the sitting parent is startled it can destroy the nest when it flies away.
Surprisingly the same next can be used 4-5 times in one season without falling apart.
Be careful getting too close to the nest, if the sitting parent feels threatened it will leave the nest, eggs and/or nestlings and not return.
The male parent incubates the nest during the day and the female takes the night shift.

Congratulations on your extended family. I hope they're doing fine in their flimsy-looking dwelling.

Mourning doves are so beautiful and make the most soothing sounds. There were flocks of them by a creek in back of my mother's house and would coo you to sleep.
