|
I know it is a little early (or late) in the year but my hubby was wondering what kind of fertilizer does everyone use on their watermelons. He has tried growing them the past 3 years and they just don't do well. The center never gets red and ripe. If it does them it is not sweet. It has no taste at all. Any information on watermelons is greatly appreciated.

Watermelons do better in sandy loam.My hucle used I think 13-10-13 comercial fertizlizer .I did on my melons this year in sandy loam and they were small because of the drought but very sweet.Chicken litter is also a good fertilizer after tilling it under really good.It is a really strong fertilizer.I have grown really large melons in mushroom compost but they were not really that sweet.I did have very sweet yellow meated ones once in compost .They do thrive on lots of water at least once or twice a week after the sun goes down.Mine seenm to be making a come back this year but probably want grow but small ones.I hope this helps a little.

I used some poultry manure, the plants are lovely and growing like crazy but sadly only one tiny watermelon. I started my plants in doors and that seemed to help but I don't think our growing season in vermont is long enough. I have heard they do wonderfully if you just toss seeds in a manure pile.
