This little (almost 1") critter was visiting my heliotrope yesterday. My boys (almost 5 and 2 1/2) were fascinated with it and wanted me to catch it and put it in their bug house. But I explained to them that I needed it in the flower garden to eat the "bad bugs".

Toni, it is a white crab spider, otherwise known as a goldenrod spider. They are quite common in my garden and I run into at least a couple of them every year. As long as they stay outside and off of my person, I let them be.
One thing I'm curious about though is what the dark spot/bump on it's back is. The ones I've seen before are all white except for the lightning shaped pink stripes. Maybe an injury?

That's some spider! I like the delicate colours of it, and I hope it makes itself useful. We've got hundreds of spiders all around the house. I leave them be because I think they bother me less than all the flies and midgets they catch would.

What an unusual spider. It looks like a ghost. What kind of webs do they make? I don't find it so scary, but I am curious about that black spot on it's back too.
Thanks for showing this interesting arachnid.

Creepy! It can stay right there where it's at, don't need anymore spiders here in oklahoma. I've done much night security work before and run into too many webs and spiders in the dark!
