Talking about prei, or leeks in english, Has got my appitite up.
On such a gray and cold day as today...it's time for the hardy farmers meals--simple and tasty.
This meal can be made with a whole host of things...just substitute the veg.

Ingredients:
1-2 leeks
A handfull of potatoes (or mashed potato mix)
bacon fat bits
Some sort of sausage

Clean and chop the leeks, wash and drain them. Just set them aside for the moment.



Cook the bacon fat bits in a small pan off to the side. Fry them until they are golden brown, then cut the heat off.

Mash the potatos and shake the drained leek cuttings onto them and stir them thoroughly through.

When it is all made, then an extra thing we do is to pour the whole lot into a frying pan and brown one side.

When it is all ready serve it onto a plate or a deep bowl. Butter (or a brown gravy) gets poured into a nest-like depression--and on top of that goes a big sausage.

My bride didn't want me to show the little canned sausages that we used for this meal, because "it's not correct".--It may not be correct, but it's all we have in the house at the moment.

That looks easy to make and scrumptious Sjoerd!! We have some leeks so I think I'll give your recipe a try. I'm always on the lookout for new recipes using leeks. Stew Face 2

That sounds delicious Sjoerd, but alas I will have to wait until we get a restaurant that serves Dutch food then I could try it.
Randy can't eat onions so I don't cook with them. Sad

Thank you folks for the nice comments. It was delicious alright--just the thing foe cold and windy days.
TONI--There are no onions in the dish.
GG--A gourmet magazine layout? chuckle. That is a sweet thing to say.

This is also made with carrots, parsnips, curly kale, endive and other things, so if leeks do not appeal to you, you can always use a different veggie.

Sjoerd that looks so darn good. I have made that before. And instead of sausages i have used carrots. but the best is smoked sausage at least for me.

I think now i know what i'm going to make for dinner tonight. That is what we need on a very rainy day here too! Geeez now i can't wait for dinner,,,,lol. Well done you 2 and thanks for your recipe!

Leeks are part of the same family as onion and since there is something in onions that causes Randy great distress a few hours later, same with garlic which also a close relative, I just don't cook with them for his sake. Sad

I could use regular bacon, potatoes and sausage with no vegies and come up with something that at least looks similar to your dish. Wink
