My pond is only 4 months old so I am a newbie! I have a question. My pond water is tea colored! The water is clear though until I use a net to remove the leaves. Then there is all this "stuff" that floats around. It falls pretty quickly back down but alot gets into my filter pad which I have to hose out. What is that "stuff" and how do I get rid of it? There is quite of bit of it and I'm getting worried that I will have to empty the water in the spring and vacuum it out. Its brownish and looks like fish poop. (I have no fish)

Oh there's all sorts of stuff down there. Pieces of leaves maybe dominant, but dirt gets down there too. We just leave it any more, it was a loosing battle keeping it out, the fish don't mind it any way. You'll just have to keep cleaning the filter.

filter cleaning is about all you'll want to do. I have fish in mine and drained it at the beginning of last spring-all my baby fish died. I will not be cleaning it this spring, just going to leave it natural.
I have heard that there is 'barley straw' that will sink to the bottom and eventually clean the water to clear again. I'm considering using this but need to do some checking into it as I'm concerned for my fish.

Is your pond water tea colored also? The water is clear, its just so dark. I see ponds at garden centers and that water is crystal clear.

right now my water is colored from all the leaves. I cannot (with working , don't have time) to be keeping all the leaves out so they sink to the bottom. I guess it would be by preferance. garden centers need to keep it clean for the publics eye viewing. some garden center will have fish in theirs and some don't. probably the ones that deal mostly with ponds will have fish. If you have one in your area, they could probably give you some advice also. I just like mine natural looking so its very seldom clear. I have about a dozen fish. Hopefully that'll have babies again this next year. And we usally have around 7-10 frogs also .

I think I will just leave it alone (other than the skimmer/filter). I've noticed that the water smells good, like a real pond. There are still a couple of frogs hanging around! I'm looking forward to my first spring, my first fish, and finishing the landscaping. Oh, it will be such a long winter this year.
