I have been researching my great Grandfathers service during the US Civil war of which he was a Union Veteran. He served 4 years and 1 month beforee being discharged. Most of his action was in the western fronts of Kentucky, Tennessee, Missippi and some in Georgia and Alabama. He took part in the siege of Atlanta and the battle of Atlanta. His Division was part of General Sherman troops during that time. Here is a picture of him. His name is James M. Kirkpatrick (seated) with my great Grandmother Francis. The young boy seated with them is my Grandfather who I never met. He died before I was born.

We have traced my dad's grandfather back through the civil war. We have copies of all his pay records, etc. He was with a group from Indiana. No pictures though. dooley

What a precious photo! How lucky you are to own it. Your great grandfather looks like a very stern character. I love the dresses the women are wearing. Very Happy

That is some awesome history of your great grandfather. The picture is very very special too. And you know your pic you have as your avatar and your grandfather, the little boy, you can see the family resemblance there. At least i can.

Dooley, I have a copy of his pension card, and the copy was made after he died and Francis applied for widows pension in 1913. Unfortunately, at the end of the war the regiment was transferring to Texas and at Cairo Ill. their steamship collided with the monitor Oneida and it was sunk with all records going to the bottom. Only one person died in the collision. What info I got was from a book written in 1880 by 2 of the officers. But official records no longer exist.

What a fantastic photo Capt! You are so lucky to have it. Do you know what year it was taken?

Netty, it was supposedly taken around 1883. My grandfather died at age 37 in the 1930's of what we now know as colon cancer. He is about 5 or 6 years old in the photo. Have no idea what they called it back then.He married my grandmother Stella and his father in law set him up with a farm. Grandpa wanted to open an auto dealership, but his father-in-law talked him out of it as he thought nothing would come of the automobile.

Great photo.
Just think, if he opened the dealership - you might be on a car chat website, and not garden stew!
