After seeing some beautiful holiday cactus from other members I went and bought some for myself. I came home with four.....yellow, white, red and magenta.
Didn't have a windowsill to put them on and all the flat surfaces in my house are covered with other stuff Rolling Eyes so I created a shelf in my craft room from an old shutter (I have this 'thing' about shutters so I collect them) some hemp cord and got it done.

One of the Magenta blooms.

For now they are still in their original pots sitting in two bread pans. As soon as they are finished blooming they will be repotted into individual pots.

What a great idea. I love old shutters too. I made a potting bench out of some once. I loved that potting bench..sigh. It did go to another gardener when I moved so that is okay.

I love it when people use every inch of space wisely...you sure did with that shelf you put up...I haven't had a Christmas cactus for so long and they are so beautiful.

I had a Christmas cactus that I inherited from my Mom. She had had it for over 50 years and I had it for about 25 or 30 years. It was the magenta colored one and it was huge and would bloom profusly. Then one day it just up and died. I think after over 75 years it had just worn itself out.

Well, 'Miss Creativeness' (is that a word) you have done it again! What a great idea. I'll bet they do wonderful in 'their' special spot. I didn't know that you should wait to repot them, till after they stop blooming! Thanks! Wink

Those all look so good on your new 'shelf' Toni. A lovely way to have plants in your craft room without having to move everything to make way for them. Stew Face 1

What a great use of space. nice way to recycle shutters into shelves. Your plants look great. Is the yellow one in flower? I don't beleive I've ever seen a yellow Christmas plant.

This is great news, Toni. They are such nice plants. Your choice of colours sound just right for the eye.
You really do have to send more pics once they really get going.
The shutter 4A plank is inspired.

Gaylyn, I don't know that you are supposed to wait until after they bloom to repot but I am waiting so that I don't accidently break off any of the buds during the process.

Petunia, the yellow one is a younger plant and so far I have only seen two buds starting.

The Magenta should have several blooms on it in a few days, so does the Pink. The White only has one bud so far, but it is a smaller plant too.

My camera and I will be keeping vigil over the next few days to catch as many blossoms open as possible.

Lovely idea, toni! Very Happy And lovely cacti too. May they bloom a lot for you. I like your shutter-shelf. People use shelves like that in the kitchen window for herbs. I think we can buy them ready-made but yours is a lot nicer.

I love the shelf idea! My Christmas cactus is magenta too, but doesn't bloom until later . I get too much light at my usable windows for it, so it sits on a tall bookcase near a window, and it's a start from my grandmother's plant. I wonder how many other houseplants become heirlooms?

I don't have a shutter, but I am going to try and rig a store bought shelf, drill 4 holes and use some heavy jute that I have. I don't have enough window space for plants either. Thanks for the idea Toni.
