I thought it would be interesting to find out what software you love to use and couldn't live without.

Some of mine are:

TextPad (Windows) - I do quite a bit of writing/coding for my work and I love this feature-packed text editor..

Firefox (Windows/Linux) - My favourite web browser. I love the fact that you can add extensions to make it perform functions outside of its original purpose.

Skype (Windows/Linux) - Phone other computers for free and make international calls for a small cost. Who wouldn't love this!

Dropbox (Windows/Linux) - Backup your files to the Web and across different computers. I wrote about this a little earlier here.

What is on your favourites list?

I am a computer nerd who lives with two computer geeks so my first thought in answer to this question was my favorite was the ON button. Rolling Eyes

But thinking about it there are a few things I really like.

Firefox- I love the multiple tabs when it comes to maintaining my rEcycle list and hanging around here.
Thunderbird for my mail, between that and gmail my email is spam and virus free.
NotePad - on your recommendation Frank, I write all my blog entries and some posts there first then Copy/Paste to the forum.
Texas Smartscape is a free and copyable program for Texas gardeners put out by the Texas Parks and Wildlife among others.

The reason that I started to use a computer in the first place, was my checking account. I could spend hours trying to balance it. I never liked to just agree with the bank, so I would try to find the mistake. A friend suggested I get a computer and use Quicken. I finally took his advice, and once I mastered Quicken I have never looked back. I have gotten new versions 4 or 5 times, but I must admit that to reconcile my checking takes about 3 minutes, and it always balances. Therefore, I’d list Quicken as my favorite. I have developed an interest in photography, and am using a couple photo programs, and am looking for something like Photo Shop at somewhat less cost. Of course Microsoft Office, Word and Excel are both favorites also. I too always do all my writing in “Word”, copy and paste to where ever, web sites or e mail. I'd be lost if I couldn't make a spread sheet from time to time. I love playing with Google Earth also.

I have so many, don't know where to begin, and may I add all are free as I pride myself on finding these great software downloads and not paying for anything I add to my PCing...I also have firefox, still hanging around incase I'd need it but I'm not impressed with it, and like IE 8 just fine np's with it..
However being very much into taking digital photo's, I luv "photoscape", much better then Picasa3 which I also have, and "Express Burn" for burning DVD's and of course AVG free edition the best anti virus software, sQusi tracking for cookies, also tweak now registry cleaner, these of course are not software that came with my PC,but free downloads, another one is photo wipe so cool you can actually wipe out something unwanted in your photo's, these are just some of my treasures, for writing, I use microsoft word processor, and for making my own greeting cards microsoft home publishing..these came with my PC.I'm sure there are more I forgot to mention.Oh yes I too play with Google Earth, and quite a few games for adults really cool casino's, poker online etc. (for fun only) of course.

I use the FireFox browser and love it, especially because of the add-ons like the commercials filter and pop-up blocker.

I also like the SpyBot that tells me when something's trying to enter the machine.

I use OpenOffice a lot too. Saves me lots of money, since I can open and save Microsoft Office documents and work on them.

My husband likes IE8, but hates my SpyBot, since it goes off every few minutes when the poor man's trying to do something on e-Bay. Laughing

This may be a little off subject, but thought it may be good to share here. I recently attended a workshop on Web 2.0 tools. For those of you who don't know what that means, as I didn't before the workshop (!), here's the definition: aim to enhance creativity, communications, secure information sharing, collaboration and functionality on the web

Here were a few of my favorite suggestions that some of you may appreciate too (some may be best in work situations):

Go Web 2.0...http://www.go2web20.net/a complete web directory of Web 2.0 tools

Twitter...http://twitter.com/a service for friends, family, and co–workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers; a good way to update staff on ongoing projects; like instant messaging; can receive messages on your phone or have it scroll across the top of your page; President Obama is using it to keep his staff informed

Scriblink...http://www.scriblink.com/an online whiteboard where you can collaborate with colleagues around the world

Doodle....http://www.doodle.com/main.htmleasy online scheduler helps scheduling meetings and other appointments, free and requires no registration. Simply set up a poll of dates, forward the link to the participants for them to respond, and follow the results of the poll to determine the best date/place/time of your meeting.

Bloglines...http://www.bloglines.com/choose the content you want to be updated on (gardening, etc.) and subscribe to the ones you're interested in, Bloglines will keep you updated so you don't have to go from site to site

Slydial...http://www.slydial.com/ communicate directly into someone's voicemail, when you want to leave someone a message but you don't have the time to talk to them

Oh boy - I spend almost all day on this thing called a PC. Smile Literally. Since I work at home and my work and play PC are the same (because you know, costs and all)..man. My butt hurts some days! LOL

I just downloaded a free HTML editor that does a great job and is pretty close to the Macromedia Dreamweaver program. www.trellian.net

I actually use Opera for a browser, but sometimes Firefox works better on certain websites. Very rarely I need to use IE, but I shudder when that happens. Smile Opera has tabbed browsing, too.

Twitter - man. Smile I have to be careful with my social media exposure. I can spend all day chatting w/ people! That's why I never start up my Trillian program (not to be confused w/ above) that runs all the IM programs in one. No need to sign-on to every one seperately! But, I have to use it on Fridays/at night. Or - zip! There went the day!
I have a Livejournal account, and I could spend all day bouncing back/forth between my work and personal Yahoo mailboxes.

I ditto someone above on the accounting package being awesome, but I happen to use Quickbooks. I have a business, so that makes sense. I also have a great program for that, but it's specific to running a company so probably not useful to anyone here. www.connectwise.com

I recently tried switching from Firefox to Google Chrome and actually really like it.

Google Chrome seems to be the fastest - the only downside at the moment is that occasionally some websites aren't completely compatible but I would have thought this would change as Google Chrome becomes more popular.

Firefox, for sure

GIMP = open source for image processing

ACDSee = photo viewing SW

Powerpoint = use it as a low-end but simple drawing program

Audiograbber for CD ripping

And the winners: Google or Copernic desktop search = find any file or mail on your PC in a second. Is freeware and saves me at least 15 min a day!!!!! http://www.copernic.com
