How do you all protect new veggie or flower plants from late frosts?

I cover mine with garden fleece Gardengater and it seems to do the trick. :-D

Would landscaping cloth do the trick?

That should work as well. You can also use gallon milk jugs with the bottoms cut out. Anything can be used. All you have to do is prevent the frost from landing on the plants. I have used buckets as well.

I do like Eileen--I use fleece.
I tend these days to use it only when there is a chance of frost. But I used to wrap my "special"plants and leave them that way all winter.
That isn't really necessary in most cases--and it also provides a wonderful climate for any aphids that might have gotten in unseen. I had that sad experience once. It was a horrendous infestation and almost ruined that rose. Live and learn, they say.

I have that infestation problem with Aphids too. The local nursery recommended insecticidal soap. I plan to plant some onions interspersed with other vegetables as I've heard they repel these. Would this work?

Well, I believe that they might well do. I plant onions around and inbetween carrots to keep away the carrot fly and I notice a big difference. If they will keep aphids away, I don't know...but I would try it, absolutely.
I don't know if you are talking about a flower garden or a veggie patch, bit if it is a flower garden you could encourage your onions to "shoot-through" and enjoy their flowers. It's a win-win situation.

Good suggestion about the onions, Sjoerd. I will try that.
