hi, i was wondering if anyone had any experience with the Robin Hood Rose or Musk Rose as its called as well.

i purchased a row of these from one of those seed catalogs last year and they arrived as bare thorny twigs with roots. I planted them with some basic soil and let nature do its work.

they sprouted leaves that spring.......they are quite hard to see in this pic..

they actually bloomed but i forgot to catch pics of that.....duh!

they lost there leaves in the winter and im not sure if they are supposed to do that or if i dodnt feed them well?

The leaves grew back this year and i fed and mulched them not too long ago. We have been getting lots of rain lately which is good as i hear they like water. They have started to take off and are a lot fuller with leaves, i cant wait for the flowers which are small flowers clustered in a pink red shade..

these are supposed to be a tough rose, they seem to be doing good, and i will feed them better this year. The ground is somewhat clayey around here.
I have a soaker hose under the mulch there for this summer..

these plants are said to get up to 7' tall but im not sure if they have to have support for that height?

i really like these guys and i hope they get bigger. They are sitting by the front edge of my yard, there is a main road in front of them since im on the edge of the neighborhood and i was trying to create a lil barrier to separate the yard from the road.

would love any tips pr advice since i cant seem to find much info on this strain of rose on the net..

Your rose hedge has really grown. You must be doing a lot right. Would love to see the pictures of it this year in bloom.

My goodness - it is amazing to see how it has grown. You certainly have green fingers.
I simply do not like taking care of roses (of any kind) too much effort and attention required. But I am impressed to see how other gardeners manage to grow theirs so well. I would love to see your roses in full bloom. :stew1:

Your rose hedge has come on in leaps and bounds GN and is going to look wonderful when it's in flower. :-D Don't worry about the leaves dropping off in winter as roses do that to conserve energy. Your hedge is a real credit to you so you're obviously doing all the right things. :stew1:

They are looking great. Robin Hood is a hybrid Musk Rose. It will reach between 3'-7' in height and 3'-5' in width. It is a shrub rose so it needs no support, it will take care of itself. Don't worry about feeding it, it thrives in poor soil...so over feeding it could be more of a problem than underfeeding it. If it gets bigger than you want, just trim it back.
I trim my shrub roses back to about 6" above the ground every fall or early spring and they grow back to about 4' tall by May when they start blooming.

As Eileen said loosing their leaves in winter is normal, they are deciduous perennials.

Bareroot plants have to spend the first year or two building up their root system as opposed to potted plants that come with a nice ball of roots. After the roots are strong then you notice a rapid amount of growth above ground.
Yours appear to have established nice roots, this year you should see a lot of growth and blooms with more each year after this.

thanks guys, i didnt do much to them last year but feed them once.

The size they get is what attracted me to them in the first place. I live by a main road so im trying in ways to cut off the views and create decent borders since the yard is kinda open to being easily walked in in spots.

I read that these roses are tough and take some punishment and are quite resistant to diseases so thats also a plus.

I will take some more pics soon, i can see buds all over now and they are really growing well and bushing out.

This kind of rose puts out long branches that kind of go in different places but once they get so big you can lay them on top of the others and they stay in place due to the thorns locking in.

i fed them some of the slow release rose food and it looks like they are loving it. I might buy some more of these guys to make a larger hedge but im not sure yet.

heres a pic of a full size one..

and heres a close flower shot i found..

they dont have a powerful smell but they are pretty and bloom a lot..
thanks for the info on the leaf energy thing..

ok i took some more shots of my robin hood roses this morning.

You will have to please ignore the weeds and grass coming up around them as i havnt had time to clean it up yet but i plan on doing it soon. I wish i had put some weed cloth prevention stuff down and also i wish i had made the mulch wider but i can fix those later.

weve had a lot of rain so the bushes have been beaten down a lil and the flowers too.....but they love the water so im not gonna complain too much.

The flowers are like lil tiny roses clustered together. They are pink with a white center.

If you look closely you can see shoots coming up out of the bushes reaching for the sky. The buds on the bushes havnt fully opened yet so i hope to get better shots later.

Think im gonna go out there in a min and start pulling up the weeds...

Well aren't they happy! GN, are these the same as Knock-out Roses that I see advertised all over the place?

I know this is an old thread, I hope the originator might be notified of my post.

I am about to start planting these around my yard. I was hoping for some advice, and maybe an update on how yours are doing.

Hi guys im back! I just logged on after over a year of absence....but i plan on a good year in the garden and updates to some of my old threads.

Imanseau i sent you a responce to your personal message, im going to paste some of it here for the other folks interested. I also plan on taking some pics soon as the buds of the robin have just this week started opening!

here's the copy and psate, the kids are wanting me to go bounce/trampoline in the yard so more updates on this topic soon.

    -------------------------------------

Hi there! Sorry for the delay but i havnt been on the site in over a year and just now logged in. It was not too good of a 2010 year for me with life, garden, and stuff but im back now!

The roses are still around and bigger than ever! They arent 6ft tall like some of the pics i see advertised on the net but they are quite bushy....probably 3-4 ft high......and thats without regular feeding. I think if they are supported they can grow higher? I plan to feed them good this year.

We had some bad snow weather i think early Jan of 2010 and a car ended up coming into my yard and running over a section of the roses. I was pretty bummed and thought there would be a big gap, which there was, until i saw a little shoot coming up from the ground where the 2 destroyed bushes used to be! I thought the area was dead but wow this was good news to see the shoot...and then some more. The bare area has fully grown back, it was quite fast and did it all with no help from me. These are some tough roses.

I will post some more pics and stuff in my old thread about this, the roses are just starting to bloom and there are tons of buds waiting. I started to lay some weed fabric around them but havnt finished yet. I think i will do that tomorrow.

I love these roses, they dont have any disease problems in this area i live in the south east (USA) and i think that is due to there genetic resistance.

Im going to try and take care of them a lot better this year. They do lose their leaves after the season but im not sure if thats natural or due to lack of feeding. I think most roses lose their leaves, im no expert. They grow in clayish soil here. The roses dont have a powerful smell but are quite pretty and different from the usual rose look in my eyes. Try searching hybrid musk rose for more info. Hoped that helped :)

    good to be back guys!
