I'm new to the site, so still finding my way around.
However, we recently moved, and I saved daylily seed from the last two years to plant at our new house (last fall and the fall before that). I put out the seed about a month ago (mid March). We've had a hard freeze since then. I put out over 200 seed, but have yet to see any results. Will these seed (or some of them) sprout eventually? Or do I need to go back to our old house and divide the plants and replant?

Thank you.

Dan Johnson

I have never tried to start them from seed, that could take a awhile. I have transplanted day lilies many many times. If you want some this year you may want to go back and dig some up and split them up and plant them at your new place. Good luck.

Thank you. I'll probably go back and divide the ones I have, and just wait to see if the seed ever sprout. Guess I was trying to taking the lazy way out.

How about putting the seed in pot and watch to see if anything happens.

Go back and divide. The seeds you saved will not come back true to color. They were cross pollinated and you will have a totally different flower on the plants from seed. It is fun to germinate them and see what you get though. I did a post once on how to germinate them but would have no idea where to find it. Maybe one of the moderators could help with that.

I can't find your post about growing daylily from seed Sharon. This link may be of use to you though Dan.

Thanks to all who wrote. I'm going to go back to my old house, divide the plants and bring half to my new house. In the meantime, I'm watching to see if the seeds sprout. I'll send pictures later.

Again, thanks to all.

I sowed some day lily seeds in pots last fall and they have come up. I don't think they will bloom this year though.

Again, thanks to all who wrote. Even though I will go back and divide the daylilies, I won't be planting over seed. Looks like they will eventually come up - and might be surprised at the colors.

On onions - I grew up on a farm in south Georgia - right in the middle of Vidalia onion country. In fact, we rent our farm to the neighboring farmer and Vidalia onions are one of the main crops. Vidalia onions are a hybrid. This means that all Vidalias won't taste alike. And, I wouldn't buy any in stores before May 1 - these are usually picked too early, tend to be a little smaller, and are not as sweet. Try this site - sweetonion.com. These are the people that rent our farm. They are good, reliable people, and usually have the best onions.
If you contact them - mention my name - Dan Johnson.

Your fine georgia climate makes the sweetest onion on this side of heaven.

They dont do that well here.

Thanks for the information.
