There is an area of the backyard that I have left natural, the birds love it and faeries love it too Wink This shrub, which I think the birds must have planted, has been growing larger over the last couple of years. Today wandering around out there I kept smelling some very pleasing fragrance, turned around just as a limb of it bumped me in the head and found all these blooms.

Don't know but it smells wonderful ( photo / image / picture from toni's Garden )

Might it be Bridal Wreath Spirea. I know it has white flowers and smells great and sweet. We had a hedge of it when we lived in Wisconsin. dooley

Nope not a Bridal Wreath Spiraea. Those leaves are long and slender, the ones on my shrub are wide and rounded.
The flower on the Spiraea are rounded, the flowers on my shrub have look almost like a star with 4 petals and two stamin.

Looks like a Ligustrum or privet hedge to me.

There is also a wild variety:

Sharon I think you got it. Thanks a bunch. I knew there was a good reason for leaving it alone.

Since this is the first year it has bloomed I will get to see the berries this fall. The birds will probably love it.
The Bees are certainly loving it now.

That's a really pretty shrub, Toni. Glad to know what it is.

There is a row of Ligustrums behind my house and when I am on the deck the area smells so sweet. Razz In fact these shrubs are all over the area. However, I don't remember seeing all the blooms and them smelling this way last year. Maybe they don't bloom every year! Confused Does anyone know? Question
