Good Morning, Does anyone know can I put a few sunflowers along the side of my veggie garden? and will they bloom this year? they are the giant ones. Thanks so much Margie
Margie if your clear from frost you can plant them now.They do grow very big here in Texas.If you plant more than 1 or 2 you will shade your garden.
I plant mine on the north side so they don't shade any other plants. They attract bees which of course help pollinate, and in the fall the birds love sunflower seeds, so your garden will be fun to watch!
I don't see why not Margie as they'll make a nice contrast to your other plants. Just make sure that when they flower you pick the heads off before they self seed into your veggie garden. I should imagine that they will flower for you this year. Good luck!! Oh you might want to start your sunflowers off in pots as birds and small mammals love them and may dig them up and eat them if they're planted straight into the ground.
Eileen I plant them in the ground but the birds hasn't found them .I grew one at the head of my garden and it grew about 15 ft tall.Yes they will bloom this year.The leaves get huge.
There is plenty of time for sunflowers to bloom for you. I have them ranging in size from 3 feet to 15 feet scattered around the yard, they bring in the bees for polination.
