It is about 5 inches and was attached to my trousers earlier today- really gave me a fright.

Probably the caterpillar of one of the Sphinx Moth varieties but I can't tell from the photo which one

I think it's the Elephant Hawk Caterpillar. Since I see you live in England, I did some searches and came up with this link which looks like the one in your pic...
