|
We are planning to finish our basement and turn it into a family room. The problem is that the stairs are very narrow -- 24" at the narrowest point and they curve. I spoke with someone at a furniture store and was told that there were no sofas that would fit down those stairs. We were also told by a contractor that widening the stairs would be a major project and cost several thousand dollars. Does anybody have any suggestions?

Maybe a futon. They come in pieces and could be assembled in the basement. The ones at WalMart come in boxes that fit in a cart. dooley

You could also get what's called a day bed to be used as a sofa and have an extra bed for company.

Look at Target. They have a small sectional sofa (with storage under each of the seats). Each section is small and might do the job...if you like the color, construction, etc. I thought about it for a small TV room.

Thanks everybody for your suggestions. I will probably have to settle for a futon (I don't think a daybed or sectional would work)but I was really hoping to find something more like a real sofa and chair (maybe something in leather.)I'm still open for suggestions.

Check out Cost Plus World Market. They have some smaller sofas and chairs. We got our red leather chairs there. They are as nicely made as what we looked at else where and have put up with the punishment of our pets.

Check out IKEA for sofas that you have to assemble. They come in boxes that you would most likely be able to get down the steps. You'd never be able to move the sofa back OUT of the basement in one piece but if you're OK with it, it would allow you to have a full size sofa there.

Some are only available at the store, others are available online. There is a "this product requires assembly" icon in the description section.

Thanks again everybody. I looked at IKEA on the internet and it looks like they have one sofa that comes apart that looks like it may work. The only problem is that I would have to order it online because we don't have any IKEAs near us. I looked up some other come-apart sofas and found 2 companies that looked interesting -- Home Reserve and Simplicity Sofas. Has anyone heard of either of these companies?
