I've been doing okay with my garden, not great but okay. Last evening I went to water because we only got a smidgen of rain. Grasshoppers have eaten nearly all the leaves off of the watermelon plants. There were a lot of leaves, too. Going everywhere in the garden and up the fence. This morning when I went out about 8 or ten cardinals and other assorted birds flew up out of the garden. I'd say they had been having breakfast on the grasshoppers. Only the watermelon was ate on but they could have ate the zucchini instead, it's turning yellow and about done for the year anyway. The tomatoes haven't done any good this year. It's been too hot and dry. So, my garden isn't doing too well right at the moment. I'm hoping as long as the tomato plants look good that they will have some tomatoes when it gets cooler. dooley

Too bad the critters like the same things we do  . Hopefully the birds feast on the old grasshoppers. It is so damp here we seldom see a grasshopper. We have slugs instead. Texas sounds like a hard place to garden in with the cold in the winter and heat in the summer. But we all keep trying don't we  Good luck!

Sorry to hear that garden things aren't going your way, Dooley. What a difference water and food would make to your plants, but I suppose that there are drought conditions there at the moment, right?
What kind of soil do you have there?

We have funny soil here. It's red clay, sand and iron ore depending on just where in the yard you are standing. I've "borrowed" loads of mushroom compost from Glenda and bought garden soil and used mulch and Miracle Gro but there is just too much sun and not enough rain. Even the farmer's at the farmer's market have small produce if they have any at all and they water as much as they can but everyone is worried about the water tables. They don't want wells running dry. The governor has declared 348 counties as drought disaster areas and lots of places have severe water restrictions. So, I guess it's just not all my garden that's not doing well. dooley

I have mostly sand in my yard and dooley has a mixture in hers.Its really wierd.I do really wish for rain.

It's so sad that rain is so unevenly distributed. I hope you'll get something good out of your garden, Dooley. I hate the thought of all your work being for noting. *hugs*
