|
I wonder what happened to my purple Echinacea this year. For years, the colour was pinky/purple. This year it is mostly green and if you look closely, there seems to be a lot of little stars amongst the mutated petals.
*scratching my head* I cannot understand why it mutated. ???? Would anyone care to make a guess?

It could be a mutation, but an absolutely gorgeous one.
It looks nothing like the Echinacea 'Green Envy' that one isn't nearly as overall green as yours is.

I haven't a clue why your plant has changed colour Chelsea but boy is it gorgeous!! The little 'stars' look almost as though new flower heads are forming. None of the 'mutations' that have occurred in my garden have been as lovely as yours.

I like it too!
I had a strange green one pop up once, but it was only green for one year. It wasn't nearly as nice as yours. I notice that one of my white Echi's is purple this year...not sure what happened there either???

Some mutants are so beautiful
Some plants react if the nutrient differ in the soil and they get more or less of what they are use to. Some minerals needs for the plant to develope the colors, for example
Just a guess

I love the green! Probably because I am always grateful for any green here. I had the opposite experience from Netty. My purples from last year had some white in it. Pretty interesting. I assumed it was a mineral change in my soil.

I would guess they are like Hydrangeas, the acidity of the soil is reflected in the color of the flowers. Acidic = bluey-purple, alkaline = pink/red.
That's my totally uneducated guess, but it should be a reason close to that.

I'm another one who loves it - I would rather that than the pink version. I guess as countrylivingcitystyle says, it could be the acidity, or it could be a virus, like those that affects tulips, or root/crown damage, but whatever, I think it looks great.
