I am in the process of building a house on 2.5 acres of former farm land. I am looking for an inexpensive way to transform the current field grass into a decent lawn. I am not trying to achieve the perfect lawn but would like for the lawn to be smoother with smaller blades of grass.

To smooth things out, you may have to bring in loads of topsoil or dirt and get dirty and sweaty as you fill in and level with the soil.

As the grass grows, it will fill in the bald spots.

This may be within a summer or longer, depending on the type of grass that is growing (clumping or rhizomes).

Smaller blades of grass............... shorter blades or skinnier blades?

You wont get skinny blades from wide bladed grass, it just doesn't happen. Field grass is field grass, whether it is native like Buffalo grass or non native like Quack grass.

You can't change that.

You may consider turning a goodly portion of your land into a wildlife habitat full of wildflowers and native shrubs and trees, you wont have to mow that and the birds and other benefits will be countless.
