The Eastern Tiger Swallowtail lays eggs on
* wild cherry
* tulip tree
* willow
* birch
* ash

The Western Tiger Swallowtail lays eggs on
* poplar
* willow
* hops
* aspens
* alders

You most likely have the Eastern Tiger but sometimes they do cross those borders, the closest the Western usually comes to your area is North Dakota.

I did find a referrence to them laying eggs on the Sweetbay Magnolia. There is also a Sweetbay Silk Moth that lays eggs on the Sweetbay Magnolia but there doesn't seem to have been any reports of the moths as far north as you are.
