Another day.....Another Garden
Day-to-day decisions are based on the events that shape people's lives. For some, there's the decision about a new car, a new family, a new house, or simply a new love (of nature). In the last 2 years, that it what has developed.
After having a thriving harvest last year, it has come to an abrupt end this year. With a very cool and extremely wet start for September, things didn't happen as planned. No only the weather, but a broken left index finger, severly cut (stitches), and a severly cut thumb, things had to be re-figured.
Now the Garden part. The cukes had stopped making, the tomotoes were growing everywhere, some 7 ft tall, and snapping stakes from all the rain. There were tomatoes, but due to the lack of sunshine, no maturity. WHAT TO DO!!!
Broken and cut fingers and all, the pole-grown cukes met their match! The stake-breaking tomatoes broke the last stake. The GARDENATOR had become The EXTERMINATOR! (I'll BE BACK!) That's right, single-handedly (literally) everything was pulled up. The cuke poles stored, and the garden ready for tilling, not to mention a bucket-load of green tomatoes, for Fried Green Tomatoes. No Fall or Winter planting. BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!
After demolition and recovery yet to come, a brilliant idea! WHY NOT BUILD A SECOND GARDEN! That's Right, I will recover and have 2 gardens next year. Therefore, I need ideas for the second one. I'm thinking Red and Green Bell Peppers in one end, and either Okra or Squash in the other end.
Limited in space- garden will be 4 x 16- so most everything goes up, not out. Suggestions more than welcome.

Aww DMullins, sorry about your finger but man, I like your attitude!!!
I grew okra this year for first time. Really liked it and think I'll grow more next year.
Are you going to dig the nw space this year or wait till Spring? I'm debating the options... I guess you may be limited with your hand, huh?

What a trooper - even with your injured hand you managed to work in your garden.  I hope those fingers heal up quickly for you.
I think we need detailed photographs of the progress you make with you new garden as we love before and after shots.

I was reading in a garden magazine that you should dig your garden in winter and put a straw mulch on it and then dig it again in the spring digging the mulch in.
I usually just dig mine in the spring and this year I just used mostly containers. dooley
