Hello... I have a technical/photography question.
It seems to me that after I resize my photos and post them on GS, the clarity looks ... less clear. Is this my imagination? Or does resizing change the clarity of a picture? And if that is the case, is there anything that I can do to maintain the crispness of the picture when I resize it?

You have to play with the DPI when you resize. That's the Dots Per Inch....the higher number of DPI the finer the photo. Most often when you change the size of the photo the DPI automatically changes to a lower number making the photo grainy so you will have to do some playing with the size and DPI to get the look you want.
What type of Image Editing program are you using?

I was using Microsoft Office Picture Manager... I'll take a look and see if I can do that.

Uploading an image directly from your computer will resize the image to a smaller size and you will have an image with less clarity. I just compared an image that I uploaded with the original on my computer and there is a distinct difference between the two.

I just checked and you can't increase the dpi with that program.... Is PhotoShop the kind of software that I need to be using? Or something else?

I'm a relative newbie here so I don't know for sure but I have seen some images that are linked to Photo Bucket.
On the two files that I compared, my original is 360 kb while the file that is here is only 38 kb. When I open both in Paint Shop there is a significant difference in the detail.

Hi daisybeans, did you means that the photo becomes less sharp after you resize on your computer or when you upload it to the Stew? When you upload a photo from your computer to GardenStew there is a very small loss in sharpness because our software automatically optimises the images to reduce the file size.

Frank, I'm not sure at what point it loses clarity... I'm not sure if it's when it gets resized or when it it uploaded to GS. I think the more significant difference is after it is resized. Thank you for the input, Frank and Karen.

Maybe I am clear out of my tree here, but I thought my resized photos on here were appearing brighter and righter.????????
I thought cropping the images made it more clear/

I think your photos look fabulous too, Bsew. Matter of fact, that's what made me look again at mine. Makes me think it is the software I used? I'm going to have to explore this some more. Maybe this is how I will beat the winter gardening blues!

Perhaps the camera ????
I use Canon s5
And USB upload .........And photobucket .It resizes for me.
If any of this helps..
I love to get a camera with a attachments for closeups
This one won't do the job.

Daisy,
I experimented with one of my photos. When I used my own photo editing software to resize the original photo to the same size as allowed here, I had the same loss of clarity. Not much, but if I wanted to print it, I would use my original from my computer.
The software that uploads a photo to this site, sets a maximum dimension of 500 pixels for either the height or width. So if your original on your computer exceeeds that, it will shrink the picture and it may also change the
resolution to provide a reasonably good quality for viewing on the web.
If you store your photos on photobucket (or other photosharing site) and add the image via a link, your images can be larger and have more clarity.
So it is not your software or your camera, it is the limits for this site which are necessary so that overly large photos aren't uploaded.
