I do like to see woodpeckers coming to the garden to feed. They are such striking birds with their colourful plumage.

What a handsome guy. I've never seen one in my yard. What have you put out for him, Bsew?

Wow
Thanks everyone.
I made my own suet .
Melted cow fat an added sunflower seeds.
The woodpeckers dessert is sunflowers.
I must correc myself .. It is a red bellied woodpecker. Some bird person corrected me.
However I did see the red head (Which is completely red from the neck up) at the feeder an missed with the camera. Slick buggers they are.. mine are .
LOL
So I have 3 types of woodpeckers coming.
Downey ...female
Red bellied
and
Large , very large Red headed..
Boy I am getting an education, on birds.
I know notthing.

I'm afraid to ask, as I have a very vivid imagination, but where do you get cow fat?

When I used to make my own suet, I would take fat off of steaks, roasts etc. and heat it up in a pan. Then I would pour the fat into a mold and add the seed. Then into the freezer over night. But it got to bea hassle after a couple of years. I also used to make it from pork fat too. I have used the grease from hamburger and sausage but it dosn't seem to hold up as well.

don't feel bad "B" I call them "Redheads" too
even tho I know better.(It just makes more sense!!!)
I have a huge one that I call "BigRed" he is my spoiled boy I make sure there is always something out there for him year round He will sit atop the sheperds hook right outside my office window and "yell" at me if the feeders are empty
I think there is a pic of him in my "Critter" gallery
he has been around for the past 3 years
I have several downy's and also saw a new "redhead" this year that "Bigred" wasn't very polite to
We supposedly have "pileateds" around here..but I've never seen one
Congrats on your new friend!!!

We get a cow butchered and they save the fat they cut off of the cow.. I pay to get it butchered.
Cook it all down an add anything you like .
Sunflower seed is the greatest for more large birds.
We raise beef cattle.. No pigs..

Nice to see that woody. We get the downy, flicker, pileated and once the hairy, I use chopped suet but it is costly now.

It is Red Bellied woodpecker. Notice the belly arean?
THere is another one prettier I cannot seem to catch.
Red headed is red from the neck up whole head.
