|
When I bought this Peace Lily (Sept-Oct/09), it was blooming like mad and it stayed in bloom for between 1-2 months. It smelled sweetly and I fell in love with it!
At the same time, there was a very little blooming thingy happening near the base of the plant.(Like the one there again.) It never grew any bigger. I had no knowledge of this plant back then. The blooms (spadix) ended their show and I cut them back as I read to do on a Google search. Becuz the little one looked dried out, I cut it back, too.
I now know to never let it dry out, even a little bit! I had to snip the brown tips b/c it got too dry. This sure is one thirsty plant. I have it in a room with very high natural light and that is cooler in the evenings.
Now, after a couple months of only new leaves starting, there is the "little one" happening again. It is about 1" across with 3 white leaves that are edged green. In the middle is the tiny, 1/4", piece that looks like a cluster of seeds. What is this? I sure wish I hadn't cut the one off when the plant was blooming!
Any help with this precious plant would be greatly appreciated! I learned that they love to live in aquariums! So much to learn!

I haven't a clue, but maybe someone else here will. For curiousity could you get a picture that is closer to it?

The long bumpy shape in the middle is called a "spadix" The white or sometimes green hood surrounding it, is often mistaken for the flower (I thought that for a long time) but it's actually a leaf bract or spathe

Jewell: My DSLR broke and my little point-and-shoot camera doesn't take very good macros. My dtr says that hers does so we are going to try to get a macro shot tomorrow. If it works, I will post back.
Bluewing0: I should've said that the spathe (the white leaf) with the spadix (bumpy pink) parts died and I cut them off. Now that I am looking at this plant with more knowledge, I can say that the "little one" looks like a miniscule spadix with 3 very tiny white spathes growing around it.
I sure hope we can get a good pic of this "little one"! I will continue to watch it and hopefully it will continue to grow up and be a beautiful bloom!

This plant does not "love" to live in aquariums but people seem to love to put them in a vase with a Betta, that also does not love to live in a vase.
It's a selling gimic and the peace lily will rot at the roots in due time but as a gift idea, seems to sell. You also see Lucky Bamboo planted in fish tanks that also will rot in time.
