I just recently received a purple smoke bush from my husbands family. We planted it in the back yard in full sun and have kept it well watered. Should it be pruned or left alone? If it should be pruned - in the spring or fall. The last time we tried this bush, the deer enjoyed it before it got very big. This one is much larger to start with and closer to the house so I am hoping it has a better chance.

Hi Polly
Purple smoke bush is called Cotinus Coggyria . It is quite easy to grow , it does not generally require pruning other than to keep its size regulated which can be done in spring or summer
