Looking for Easy recipes because I dont know how to cook!

    Hi, Me and my sister are roommates in the city for now and both of us don't know how to cook all we know is "microwave cooking" we know that doing this will be bad for our healths but we don't have a choice we will starve so i was wondering if their are any recipes you know that are easy to follow and still a healthy meal.

    I am sure that if you tell us a few of the kinds of foods you like we can help. Most vegetables are easy and many recipes add meat so something like chicken pot pie and a salad are easy to prepare and healthy. Soups and stews along with a crusty roll and salad are great for beginners as they take little more than knowing how to boil water to prepare.
    For a quick and easy chicken pot pie you need about three chicken breast tenders per person cut into bite size pieces, 1/2 med onion, 4 to 6 large button mushrooms, (sliced) 1 large can cream of mushroom soup,1 medium potato, and one cup of frozen peas and carrots (or one of the single serving cans, drained) and one can of refrigerated biscuits. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In saute pan in about 1/4 c. canola oil saute chicken and potatoes (diced small), on med. heat till almost done ( about 8 minutes) add onions (diced), mushrooms and cook about 5 minutes more. Drain oil and discard, add soup, slightly less than 1/2 can water, salt and pepper to taste and heat till soup is smooth, add peas and carrots. Pour into casserole dish and top with canned biscuits. Bake till biscuits are brown on top. About 15 to 18 min. Serve with salad for a complete meal.

    Thanks everyone, although I am not sure what a "Super Post" is yet. Hopefully some of the other members will post recipes that these two girls can use to eat healthy. Eating from the microwave and/or restaurants can be expensive and unhealthy. Learning to cook even simple things can be a way to spark interest in the food you eat. Try making your own granola for breakfast. Its much better and you can control the ingredients. Come on people,, any good recipes out there?

    So glad you're concerned about your health!

    I have a tip that is good on the wallet as well as better health-wise. Get yourselves a crockpot, then google "crockpot recipes" or "slow cooker recipes" online. You won't believe how easy it is. You throw some stuff in this miracle appliance in the morning (which you can prepare the night before if you want to) then come home to a nutritious dinner already cooked! Most of my crockpot meals take less than 10 minutes to prepare. Ignore that browning of meat if you want to (except ground beef) and chicken can go in frozen if there is liquid involved. Fresh, home-cooked, economical, healthy meals with almost no effort at all. Love, Mom (lol)

    actually my sister like eating alot of granola bars but i dont like it.,
    the usual food i can cook is bacon, burger(preservative) and eggs although they are easy to cook they are not healthy :-|

    Hello Korki,

    For easy cooking, my first solution is always crock pot. There are hundreds of easy recipes and crock pot cooking is very 'forgiving'.

    1) You can put in the basic veggies like carrots, onions, celery, potatoes, mushrooms and many more.

    2) You can rotate your meal e.g. - Monday-Chicken, Tuesday-Port, Wednesday-Beef ect

    3) You can use different broths (low sodium) like vegetable broth or canned vegetable soup, chicken broth/soup, beef broth or canned soup ect

    4) Put in the veggies for that day. Be brave to try out different veggies with different meat/beans.

    Crockpot cooking is very forgiving if you don't have the right taste, you can always add a little bit of some other kind of seasoning at the end of the day and depending on both your schedules, you can cook in the crock pot overnight for lunch to take with you. Just remember to cook it a 'low'.

    My other quick meal is a rice cooker with a steamer insert on top.

    Cook 1cup of jasmine rice with 2cups of water/broth. If I want chicken rice, I throw in 1 or 2 chicken bouillon cube/s when it's boiling. If not use 1.5cup cold water and use half cup hot water to break down the bouillon cube and stir it well before pushing that 'cook' button. FYI, most bouillon cubes doesn't have msg in them and I don't have any problems with msg. MSG is vegetable based - depending on the brand you buy.

    When I want some quick veggies, put some broccoli, carrots, onions and shrimp on a very flat plate and season it with oyster sauce, toss and mix it well and put the plate on the insert steamer on top of the rice cooker. Close the lid and push the button. You will have a complete meal in about 20minutes (+/-)..depending on the type of rice cooker you buy.

    Invest in a good crock pot & rice cooker and it doesn't have to be very expensive. FYI, you can cook soup/stew in both the crock pot and rice cooker and no frying needed. If you want more recipes..let me know. Remember to enjoy whatever you're doing.

    Even the bacon and egg breakfast can be healthy. Try turkey bacon or just drain the regular bacon well on a couple of layers of paper towels. Switch your cooking oil to canola oil rather than the high cholesterol vegetable or corn oils. Learn to read labels, and know what is a good level of sugar, carbs, and total fats in the foods you buy. The lower the better of these three things. You also might watch the sodium in packaged foods. Fresh is always better with vegetables. And like the ladies said,, the crockpot is a wonderful appliance to have. You can cook almost anything in it. And it is a pretty good yogurt maker if used on the low setting. Just use a half cup of regular plain yogurt and some lowfat milk. It will make in about 6 to eight hours. You can drain a bit of liquid off if you like it thicker and add your own fresh or frozen fruit. Much cheaper than the bought stuff and I like it better.
