    Good Morning,

A friend of mine gave me this plant and told me it was a goldfish plant (athough she gave the same plant to someone else and said it was a lipstick plant).

Recently my huband saw this plant in our local Home Depot and was told it was in the same family as the goldfish plant (they thought). The stem is twice as thick as the first plant and the leaves are a bit bigger. Is this a goldfish plant or something else?

    Thanks for all your help!

The Goldfish plant Hypocyrta glabra and the Lipstick plant Aeschynanthus are in the same Family-Gesneriaceae but they diverge after that.

Your's does look like the Goldfish plant. But the Lipstick plant does have some species with similar leaves.

Has it bloomed for you? The shape of the bloom may be the most accurate way to ID it.

No, neither has bloomed for me. The plant itself is very pretty even if it never blooms.

I also have 2 plants that are the lipstick plant (One I know is cause I got the start from a plant that blooms).

I am trying to figure out what all my plants are and their lighting needs. All my plants are in my work office and I have a small window that faces West and I am running out of room in front of the window. So far nearly all of the plants are in front of the window and doing well, but as I get more some of them will have to be moved away from the window as I don't think I can get a bigger window installed lol.

    thanks for the input,
    Lena

Looks like my goldfish plant :p Mine used to bloom all the time. I guess he got tired or went on strike! I can't get it to re-bloom, no matter what I try  It is a beautiful, healthy plant, not as vigorous as my lipstick plant but still a great office plant! I love the dark green, lush looking leaves.

The plant my husband got me has varigated leaves. I have took a cutting off of it and am trying to see if I can get it to root. If so, I may just make a smaller "office plant" and take the bigger one home.

I have a few plants I will be overjoyed with if they bloom. My luck runs towards the won't bloom though.

My co-worker that I got the lipstick plant from didn't know what she had. Another co-worker in her department told her "Hey that is a lipstick plant, stick a pencil in it and it will bloom." Laurie thought Lisa was a bit off her rocker but figured she didn't have anything to lose from trying it out. She stuck a pencil in the pot and less than 2 weeks later she had blooms. Maybe it would have bloomed anyway, or maybe not, but at least she got to see what the plant was and enjoy the unusal flowers.

I just noticed that the underside of the leaves on my golddfish plant (the first pictured one) are a burgandy/purple color where yours in your picture look more green. Now I want it to bloom so I can see what it is that I really have!
