Well it's been 3 weeks since the squirrels have not been able to get to the bird feeder. The last seed cake lasted almost 2 full weeks. It was lasting 3 days with the squirrels and chipmonks getting at it. The birds finished off the last one yesterday and I hung a new one out this morning. It took them a whole half a second to find it. I think they were up in the trees waiting for me to put it out. There was a Downey Woodpecker came flying in while I was standing beside it. He didn't seem a bit bothered that I was so close.

Good work Capt. Maybe the squirrels have given up Razz The little stinkers...
We always have woodpeckers waiting when we put out new suet, it's so fun to watch them fly up to the feeder to get the first bites.

Do you fancy a trip to Scotland to get rid of my squirrels too CK? I've stopped putting out fat balls and fat cakes with them around. Sad

Eileen, all I did was string thin wire from one tree to another. The wire is too thin for the squirrels to walk on. It's about 1/8th onch thick. The wire is about 20 foot long and hangs loose. I hang the feeder in the middle so it is about 6 feet off the ground. The squirrels and chipmonks come up and clean up what the birds drop, but that's ok. At least the birds get first chance at it. The small woodpeckers spend the whole day out there too. The hummingbird feeder has been really busy today. Most of the flowers are gone now, so they are hitting the bottled juice pretty good. I got to laughing this morning. There was a female at it and she would drink and then look up at the jug. I guess she was checking to see how much was left.
