Tonight I saved the inner pit of the Mango we had for dinner. (It was fabulously Yummy too!) I have always wanted to grow one of the seeds so tonight decided this was would be the one to try. I opened the hard outer husk with aluminum cutters from my husbands workbench. I was quite taken aback when I found inside this perfect little sprout already growing. It even had an umbilical cord of sorts connecting it to the outer seed. I have it in a pot of dirt and can't wiat to see it grow. Just wanted to know if anyone has ever grown one...any advice???

Oh I'd love to be able to grow mangoes as they're my all time favourite fruit - especially honey mangoes.  I hope your little sprout grows into a healthy plant and bears fruit for you in the future. Do show us more photographs as it develops won't you?

Hi I have grown it before. I never took off the shell. just placed the seed in a jar of water, half full with seed on the bottom and waited until it sprouted. Then just potted it up. Grew quite tall and could not get it inside. the frost got it. Never got any mangos. The plant was pretty kinda like a schefflera if memory serves me right. Good Luck

 Eileen I will keep it updated.
Feather, I like schefflera plants. I don't see them around to buy as often as I did the late 70's early 80's...only the small ones. I'll keep it growing as long as I can.

I've planted the mango seed expecting it to immdediately sprout above the surface, and there is no show of it. I am wondering if it could be much the same as a butterfly or baby bird. Did it need to break through the hard outer shell to be viable. Hmmmmm....I'll give it a few more days, and if there is not sprouting, I will eat another mango (gladly, very gladly) and then plant the whole pit and all.

I have not planted a mango tree before but my mum did and she had planted quite a few species. All the mangos she planted were bud grafted because it will really take a long time to fruit when planted from seed.
My neighbour have a matured tree right in his front yard.

It was a craze about a couple of decades ago and everyone in the neighbourhood will definately have at least a mango plant in their yard. I did not have one because I hate sweeping up the leaves and it is too big anyway.

There are still some mangos on this tree, it is seasonal. When it is at its peak there is at least a couple of hundred fruits on it.

Those that are closer to the fence were wrapped with newspaper to avoid being taken by the biggest pest to humans ..... theieves!! 
Drissel, I am keeping my fingers crossed that your mango sprout soon meantime ehjoy the mangos. Oh ya, we get our mango from the fruit seller and sometimes the seeds just sprout in the compost pile.

I've grown mango from the seed. You can dry it for a 2 days and then just bury it under the soil and wait, and watering it everyday. I just saw a mango seedling sprouting under my mango tree and I think someone just threw it there and it just grew by itself.

The baby mango is about an inch and a half tall now. It seems to be at a standstill and is not growing too much, but it is alive. When it gets a little sunnier...raining here now...I'll take a pic of it and post.
