I bought a box of shade wildflower mix but I don't know how long it will take to come up I would like to have some color this summer, I can hear you saying you can't have everything right know Right!! I can't help it I been wanting to do this for so long, and know I finally got around to it. I hate walking in and just seeing ole woods, I went out there and cut a few little trees and took away brush and leaves and I'm like a kid I can't wait to start!! So what ever you all can suggest would be great, Will dianthus grow and bloom in shade? I don't know,I done all this work and don't know what to do, Maybe CRY!! Just Kidding. Really the tall stuff gets me I don't have any ideas.

    Thank you Margie

    Margie,
This may not be very helpful, but I have found that planting wildflowers when Mother Nature does usually works best. In other words, when the flower in question goes to seed, that's when you scratch up an area and toss down some seed.
I haven't had much luck with "wildflower mixes" since the seeds need different depths for germination, and sometimes different conditions (light, moisture, etc.).
About your wooded area--try planting half your mixture in the early spring, and the other half in the fall. The annual wildflowers will re-seed themselves.
Dianthus generally like a sunny location. Can you plant them on the edge of the wooded area where they get at least a half-day of sun?
Your wooded area will be lovely with a carpet of wildflowers. It just might take a couple of years to get things going well.
