Is the thing you found 10" long like you mentioned before?
If the 2" deep thing is an item that you don't mind hiding, you could put couple 4" pots in it then fill the whole space with dried moss stuff.
You could do without the moss, put the pots in the 'thing' and leave the top of the pots showing.
Then you won't be limited on what you plant.
Most roots will spread if the can't grow downward, unless it is a plant that has a tap root. I would think a pot of Petunias or Calibrachoa would do just fine in the 'thing'
You could also line that planter area with the coir stuff, insert a small kitchen trash bag, fill it with soil the depth of the planter then plant anything you want in it.
