Toni sent us some trees so you can guess what we did today. Yep! We planted trees. We put three small pecan trees in buckets until fall so we can decide where they will fit into the scheme of things. We gave two pecan trees to Tammy and three pecan trees to Diana. They are our neighbors. We planted four oak trees in the front yard. We still have four to plant. Our "gardener" came and dug the holes when he got home from school. They didn't require very big holes as they aren't very big trees. But mighty oaks grow from small acorns, right!
We lost four cedar trees and gained one oak tree about 12 feet tall and now these little ones. We still want to put the two dogwoods in the front yard, too, but will leave them in the buckets until fall. We still have two red bud, a golden raintree and two plum trees in buckets. We will have shade at some point, just how long is the question? But there is still some shade up in the southwest corner so we have a place for our lawn chairs and grill. We are making a table for there. I got my flowers planted out there so I only have left the roots to cut up in that one corner. I need to plant a few more morning glories, too. Then, we still have a deck to build but all in good time.

Most oak and just about all pecan are pretty substantial trees. Plant 30 feet apart each way.

If you mulch to their drip edge, and supplement water when its drouthy they'll get bigger faster.

Pecan will loaf and not grow much the first few years above the soil line. Their roots will grow first. Mulch and water are not luxuries. Year three to five the above grade tree will grow quite quickly if you help the feet to grow first.

That's great Dooley! I need to plant more trees this year too. I have pre-ordered 5 Sugar Maples from the town - they are supplying them for Earth Day for a small fee. I also hope to get a few apple trees planted this year as well :)

    Ah, Trees...

Way to go dooley. We just planted some trees too. We ordered them from Gurney's nursery off the internet and they came in a lightweight, tall box via UPS. The roots all looked like they had been shook free of dirt and we didn't think the remaining root filaments would take. We planted them 2 weeks ago and actual budding leaves are starting to appear - Amazing. One is a Honeycrisp apple, one a Stanley plum, and one a dogwood. The dogwood has yet to show signs of life though...
