Is this a flower or a weed that I need to get rid of? I don't remember planting anything in this spot but when this came up in the spring I left it to see what it was. Now it is in bloom with purple blossoms and looks a lot like a weed. It is about 3 ft high.

This looks like Blue Vervain (but it also could be Purple Loosestrife, you don't want that). Check out the pics in this Google search....

I planted mine because the tag said hummingbirds love it, you'll find so do bees, so don't plant it right by the entrance to your house.

Are the stems square? If so it could be verbena borealis, or a wild form of it.

The stems are square and the pictures I found of blue vervain seem to match I just don't know where it came from. Thanks for your help everyone.
