Airlines Take Cost Cutting to New Lows
August 5, 2002 - Mississippi, USA
In an effort to cut costs, major airlines are resorting to cutting back even the smallest of items to curb expenditures. One in particular is the removal of barf bags on flights commencing August. "Annual savings are expected to exceed $450,200US", stated investor relations manager Carol Bauer, "The small percentage who actually use them are increasing ticket prices for the rest." But outraged motion sickness prone travelers had a less enthusiastic view of the matter. "I guess I will just have to hurl onto the meal tray. Frankly, based on my last flight, I don't think the Sautéed Pork and vegetable melody will look much different if I did." said one angry traveler. When the airlines were asked what they expected passengers to do in the event of motion sickness they replied, "Users of our planes who are prone to such sensitivities should bring with them preventative medicines and appropriate containers, we are not operating a flying hospital."

And yet we continue to support airlines with tax dollars and ignore a very valid rail system.

I fly quite a bit.I will fly out of Houston Aug.5th to Billings Mt.I don't understand why they cut back so much when the tickets are so expensive.Unless you fly 1st.class they don't serve any food .Just free soda and maybe pretzels.

Bring your own bag, eh? I know another line was starting to sell advertising space on it's bags to offset the cost - who would've thought it? (and what company will want to advertise on a barf-bag, I can't help but wonder... drug companies?)

My dad is a pilot, so I'm comfortable with planes but I've been around folks who really needed those little bags, and can't say I would want them to be caught without. Sheesh!

I used to like flying when I was younger, but since 9/11 I really haven't wanted to. It's not the fear of being hijacked and crashing, but now they want you at the airport what 3 hours before your flight? Plus the standing in line to be scanned, searched and whatever else they do to you. In the amount of time it would take to get ready for the flight, take the flight, etc. I could probably drive there and be more comfortable!

We have an airline in Europe call RyanAir and they are the most popular and profitable low-cost airline because they make small little costs cuts like this. A meal isn't included in the price of your ticket so you have to buy on board which for me is great because it cuts down on the price of a ticket. I think they got rid of the barf bags as well. It's amazing how even the smallest of cuts saves these companies a fortune.
