i have to admit after the failure of last year the compost this year is going great. just wondered if you guys put weeds in your compost. Theres obviously ones i wouldn't like dandelion root etc. just wondered how weed free people keep there compost thanks
As long as the weeds haven't started to flower or set seed, they should be fine. Seeds can live forever in compost and then you have the weeds in all sorts of new places.
We compost weeds that, as Toni said, haven't set seeds. Those that have go into the chicken coop. Even when the compost gets to cooking, it doesn't get hot enough to kill all the weed seeds.
If I'm going to put weeds in the compost, I also cut off the roots. Some weeds just seem to want to grow no matter what you do. But, no seeds or seed pods either. dooley
I have to put the weeds in the compost, after the stern warning the post master gave for trying to mail them to friends and relatives...
Hi Dan. I compost most weeds, but things like bindweed and ground elder, I first separate the foliage from the roots. Same thing with dandelions and that sort plant. I do not worry too much about the seeds, as my compost gets so blasted hot that it makes ashes. It really does compost quite thoroughly.
