    That looks like a Hop Hornbeam (Ostrya virginiana) named for the way the flower/seed clusters look like the Hops plant.

    I agree, and my tree book describes the bark exactly as your picture shows. Not a commercially grown tree due to it's size but is a great wood for tool handles such as hammers.
